EU Support for the Green Transition of Local Governments and SMEs Presented During EU Green Week in Serbia

Belgrade, 5 June 2025 – As part of the EU Green Week and World Environment Day celebrations, the support that the European Union provides to local governments and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) through the EU for Circular Economy in Serbia project was presented at the EU House in Belgrade.

This year’s World Environment Day is dedicated to the fight against plastic pollution. The event was held under the broader EU for Green Agenda in Serbia initiative, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the Ministry of Environmental Protection, and with the financial and technical support of the European Union, in cooperation with Sweden and the European Investment Bank, and with additional contributions from the governments of Sweden, Switzerland, and Serbia.

As part of the programme, a public session was held to highlight the concrete activities of the EU for Circular Economy in Serbia project, with a focus on the role of local initiatives in advancing sustainable production and consumption models. Boris Šćekić, Deputy Team Lead of the project, presented the support that the EU provides to local self-governments and SMEs, aimed at promoting more efficient use of resources, waste reduction, and the adoption of circular business models.

“Circular economy is not just an environmental concept – it is also a development opportunity for local communities and small businesses in Serbia,” said Šćekić. “Through this project, we aim to empower local governments to recognize the potential of their own resources and to support SMEs in developing innovative solutions that will allow them to grow in a sustainable way.”

The event also featured the presentation of other EU-funded initiatives and programmes in the field of environmental protection, with the goal of encouraging broader participation of citizens, institutions, and businesses in the implementation of the Green Agenda in Serbia.
